AeroVironment has recently released a Puma AE drone that combines a previously developed hybrid model fuel cell power system that can fly in the air for nine hours. The aircraft weighs 13 pounds and can be launched manually in minutes. It does not require a launch pad and a landing pad. This will be a key milestone, and it will have great potential for military, public safety, and commercial customers. The solar Puma AE device stayed in the air for 9 hours and 11 minutes. The battery has an ultra-thin gallium arsenide solar cell device, and the gallium arsenide solar cell can generate enough power for the aircraft to fly long distances, and the increased weight of the aircraft is almost negligible. It uses solar energy to extend battery life by two to three hours longer than non-solar Puma AE devices. The Puma AE device was used by US military authorities to intercept intelligence, surveillance and investigations since 2008. However, the recent approval of the handheld launch drone system for commercial missions was tantamount to eliminating the commercial impediments of drones in U.S. airspace. The senior vice president of AeroVironment stated: “This will be a key milestone. It will be very promising in many aspects that require the use of small drones, such as military, public safety, and commercial customers.†Such drones can be used in oil spills and marine surveys as well as in commercial applications. In this way, Puma AE customers can take advantage of the long flying time to create a low-cost flight system and use its flexibility to do some special business activities. At present, AeroVironment's solar Puma AE drone is still in the research and upgrade stage. It was found in the experiment that it can safely complete the test flight in the Arctic Region.
