The reporter learned from the China Electric Power Enterprise Association today that China's energy resources and demand are in a reverse distribution. Large-scale coal and electricity bases, hydropower bases, and wind power bases are mostly located in remote areas in the west and north. After large-scale development, the power needs long-distance large-capacity power supply. The strong demand for transportation in the Middle East requires the acceleration of the construction of smart grids, the improvement of the resource allocation capabilities of the grid, the rapid growth of energy demand in China, and the preservation of energy security.

During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the global smart grid will still be in the initial stage of development, and it is basically at the same starting line at home and abroad. This is an important period of strategic opportunities for China's power industry to achieve leapfrog development and lead the world.

According to reports, during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the development of China’s power grids will be based on a strong grid with the UHV grid as its backbone, supported by a communications information platform, and will include intelligent control as a means of power generation, transmission, and power generation. The six stages of power transformation, power distribution, power utilization and dispatch cover all voltage levels and achieve a high level of integration of “power flow, information flow, and service flow”.

At the same time, on the basis of the UHV AC pilot demonstration project, it will also accelerate the construction of large-scale coal and electric power bases in the western and northern regions, southwest hydropower bases, and access systems for large-scale wind power bases in Jiuquan, Mengxi, and Zhangbei, and future nuclear power bases. Focus on accelerating the construction of UHV AC synchronous power grids in North China, East China and Central China. In 2015, the UHV power grids in North China, East China and Central China formed the main grid of “three vertical and three horizontal,” and the Ximeng, Mengxi, Zhangbei and Northern Shaanxi energy bases were sent to North China, East China and Central China through three vertical UHV AC channels. Electricity, north coal power, southwest hydropower through the three horizontal UHV AC channel to North China, Central China and the Yangtze River Delta UHV ring transmission.

In the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, China Southern Power Grid plans to build a number of DC projects such as the ±800 kV UHVDC project at the Nuozhadu Hydropower Station, and ±500 kV from Xiluo to Guangdong. In 2015, the main grid of the West Power Transmission Network in the East established a “Nine Direct and Eight Cross” power transmission channel on the basis of “Five Straight and Eight Turns” in 2010, and each province (Region) formed a strong 500 kV backbone grid. Cooperate with Hainan Nuclear Power to build the second phase of Hainan-Guangdong Interconnection project, strengthen the networking with Hong Kong and Macau SAR, and ensure the supply of Hong Kong and Macao power.
