A research team from Stanford University recently announced breakthroughs in the field of batteries, improving the performance of lithium batteries while reducing the volume and weight. In recent years, the use of silicon anodes for the improvement of battery performance has been more efficient than the graphite currently used. However, the silicon particles will also swell during charging, and cracking and crushing will occur very easily. These particles also chemically react with the electrolyte of the battery, forming a film that degrades battery performance.

Stanford University's research team and the US Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory teamed up with each silicon particle wrapped in a "custom cage" made of graphene. These cages have only a single atomic thickness, allowing the silicon particles to expand or split, but ensuring that each particle can continue to function together. Graphene cells can prevent the silicon particles from reacting with the electrolyte.

Yi Cui, who is in charge of the project, said: "At present, the project is still under test. The special graphene cage actually improves the electronic conductivity, so as to provide higher load carrying capacity, chemical stability and performance. Deployed on other electronic materials to create high-density, low-cost battery materials."
