A new issue of Nature’s magazine in the United Kingdom published a new study, saying that researchers have developed a molecular material that can overcome the limitations of flash memory space caused by traditional electronic components, enabling commonly-used cameras, cell phones, and other memory cards to increase storage capacity. Flash memory is a very common data storage technology, but due to the existing data unit design issues, this storage method has physical limitations. At present, flash memory devices use metal oxide semiconductors, and it is difficult to produce components with a size below 10 nanometers using this material, which limits the space that conventional silicon chips can store. Previous studies have also proposed that one can try to replace this metal oxide with a single molecule, thereby breaking the physical limitations. However, molecular storage materials have many practical obstacles such as poor heat resistance and high resistance. To that end, researchers at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, together with their Spanish counterparts, used a compound known as polyoxometalate to synthesize a class of molecules that can act as storage. Experiments have shown that the structural stability and power-on capability of this molecule are all satisfactory and can be used as storage nodes for flash memory devices. University of Glasgow professor Lee Cronin, who led the study, said that one of the great benefits of this new material is that they can be installed directly into existing flash memory devices without the need to redesign the entire flash memory device production line.
