Mitsubishi Chemical (Headquarters: Tokyo) and Daiyangjinsu will begin selling dehydration systems using zeolite membranes to the bioethanol production process in the United States. Mitsubishi Chemical is responsible for providing zeolite membrane units and modules, and Mitsubishi Chemical Engineering Corporation is responsible for manufacturing the dehydration system. Dayang Japan will market through its US subsidiary Matheson Tri-gas' sales network. This system utilizes the Zeolite film "ZEBREX" developed by Mitsubishi Chemical. This zeolite membrane has a uniform pore size of 3.8 Ã… and a strong separation capability, which can increase production efficiency (see the figure). In addition, its water resistance is also superior to the original zeolite membrane, even in the high water content environment, it can also separate ethanol and isopropyl alcohol from water. In the bioethanol production process, a dewatering system using ZEBREX can save 5 to 10% compared with the original zeolite membrane process and distillation, and it is expected to increase production by about 10%. As the United States revised its Air Purification Act in 1990 and the Energy Policy Act in 2005, the practice of adding bioethanol to gasoline has been promoted. The demand for bioethanol has increased. There are now 215 production facilities with a total capacity of 50 million kL/year. There are also new plans. Bioethanol contains a large amount of water in its raw materials. In the preparation process, distillation requires large equipment and a lot of energy. Especially in the West Coast region such as California, energy costs are high and bioethanol production requires the use of energy-saving processes. In this context, Mitsubishi Chemical and Daiyang Hitani are planning to promote the dehydration system using ZEBREX zeolite membranes.
