Once it was an "impossible mission"

"Yanyou No. 12" is a late-season hybrid rice. It has taken the yield of late rice in Zhejiang province for four consecutive years and is comparable to the super rice of Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice.

In the early 1980s, just graduated Ma Rongrong was assigned to the Ningbo Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He and four or five people established a research team for the use of hybrid heterosis between rice and indica.

Its rice ear is twice as large as ordinary rice

Zhang Jianmin is also a dean of the Ningbo Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He has worked with Ma Rongrong for many years. Since 2005, he has been devoting himself to researching “Yanyou 12”.

"The average rice ear is only about 160 grains, and the "Yanyou 12" is more than 300 grains. The average grain yield of common rice is 460 kilograms, and the average grain yield of the "Yanyou 12" is twice that of ordinary rice. "Zhang Jianmin said that compared with ordinary rice, the superior rice of "Yaoyou 12" has a higher height, a stronger stalk, and fuller grain.

In addition, there are many features of "Yanyou 12".

"First of all, the planting density is different." Zhang Jianmin said that ordinary rice is planted with 20,000 bushes per acre, while the "Yaoyou 12" is only under 10,000 bushes. "Even if it is 5,000 or 6,000 bushes, it can be more. But not live."

In terms of disease prevention and insect repellent, the "Xianyou 12" uses 50% more biological pesticide than ordinary rice. It sounds like pesticides seem to be used too much, but after various experiments, this is the most appropriate ratio.

According to Zhang Jianmin, "Yaoyou No. 12" can achieve such a high yield, and it is inseparable from such outstanding grain producers as Xu Yuejin.

“Modern agriculture requires modern field management techniques, which in turn requires modern farmers. Xu Yuejin can use modern agricultural machinery to manage eight to nine hundred acres of farmland. It can also manage finely and produce hundreds of acres of high-yield demonstration farms and single acres. It is not easy to attack Tian Tian.” Zhang Jianmin said that no matter how good the technology is, it will be no good if it is not implemented. “Farmers have played a crucial role.”

Zhang Jianmin: Constrained by temperature conditions, soil environment, and cultivation techniques, especially in Ningbo, a monsoon-climate city, Ningbo has to blow northwest winds 20 days before harvest, so each time the average yield of “Yanyou 12” is increased. A substantial increase means a major technological breakthrough. The capture of technical problems is a long-term and slow process. We will extend the experimental field to mass production. Zhang Jianmin: From 798.2 kg in 2008 to 800 kg in 2010, the average yield per mu reached 963.65 kg, each time a major breakthrough.
