Catalytic Degradation of Phenol Contaminants by Nano-Fe/Graphene Fenton Catalysts: Graphene Promotes Mat Transfer and Synergistically Recovers the Unique Catalytic Mechanism of Ferrous Ions in Fenton-like Reactions Graphene materials have unique physical and chemical properties and have broad application prospects in the fields of energy, catalysis and environment. In recent years, iron-based magnetic nanoparticles have been used for the design and preparation of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts due to their advantages of low cost, magnetic separation, and good catalytic activity. Classical Fenton Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2) reactions can produce highly reactive hydroxy free (•OH), however, in applications that degrade organic contaminants, catalysts are difficult to recycle, and the reaction produces large amounts of iron. Recently, Zhang Yagang, a researcher at the Resource Chemistry Research Department of the Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, led his team to uniformly load Fe0 and Fe3O4 onto the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) at the nanometer scale, resulting in magnetic separation and high catalytic activity. The nano-catalyst (Fe0/Fe3O4-RGO), which was repeatedly used repeatedly, was used as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to degrade phenol contaminants in the aqueous phase. In the previous research work, Zhang Yagang's team studied the reduction process of graphene oxide and performed magnetic functionalization to prepare magnetic reduction graphene oxide materials with different reduction degrees for the adsorption of pollutants, bisphenol A, and The effect of graphene oxide reduction on the adsorption kinetics and adsorption capacity of bisphenol A was revealed. On this basis, in order to enable the catalyst to be repeatedly used in the catalytic process, researchers used graphene as a carrier to uniformly load Fe0 and Fe3O4 onto graphene at the nanometer scale, thereby preparing nano iron-based/graphene A Fenton-like catalyst (Fe0/Fe3O44-RGO) is used to catalyze the degradation of phenol contaminants in water. The experimental results show that the prepared nano-catalyst Fe0/Fe3O4-RGO has excellent catalytic activity and can degrade 100% of phenol in 30 minutes. The catalyst has excellent stability and can be reused several times. After five cycles of catalysis, The phenol removal efficiency can still reach 93%. In addition, the catalyst can also be magnetically separated quickly and simply. Researchers also revealed the unique catalytic mechanism of Fe/Fe3O4-RGO nanoparticles. The catalytic mechanism is based on the synergy effect of Fe0/Fe3O4-RGO to restore the regeneration of Fe2+. Fe0 nano-particles and Fe3O4 nano-particles are evenly dispersed on RGO at the nanometer scale, leaving more active sites exposed to the surface of the support. RGO as an electron transfer medium can effectively promote the transfer of electrons from Fe0 to Fe3O4 so that Fe2+ is regenerated. The Ï€-Ï€ interaction between the phenol molecule and RGO allows the phenol molecule to be effectively adsorbed on the catalyst surface, increasing the probability of the phenol molecule being in contact with •OH. Based on these factors, Fe0/Fe3O4-RGO has excellent Fenton-like catalytic activity. The relevant research results have been applied for Chinese invention patents and were recently published on the RSC Advances. The design of such magnetically separable, highly catalytically active, reusable nanocatalysts provides a new design idea for the design of catalysts for the oxidation-degradation of organic pollutants using the Fenton-like reaction.
