On July 6, 2017 World Graphene Innovation Conference was held in Changzhou. In his speech, Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Political Consultative Conference, Li Li, said that the graphene industry should be built into a new bright spot in Jiangsu's transformation and innovation.
The 2016-2017 China Graphene Development Annual Report (hereinafter referred to as the “Annual Report”) published by the China Economic Information Society shows that since 2016, China’s graphene enterprises have exploded, with more than 700 new companies each year, including R&D. Class companies account for about 43%.
However, at present, China's graphene industry is still in the initial stage of concept introduction and industrialization breakthrough. Since the preparation technology is still immature, only some products that do not require high quality of graphene have been commercialized, and no revolutionary products have been introduced.
In fact, this is one of the problems commonly encountered in the pursuit of high-tech in the transformation of local governments. At this time, how does the government innovate?
In the speech of the conference, Changzhou Municipal Party Committee Secretary Gao Gaoyun said that the government should find ways to provide assistance for low-cost mass production products, be patient, and implement more precise industrial support policies according to practice to promote high-end applications to the industry. In the direction of mass production, we will strive for more applications.
Three major industrial agglomeration areas
According to the "Annual Report", as of February 2017, the number of enterprises with patents of graphene technology and related preparation, sales, application, investment, testing and technical services reached 2,059, among which the number of enterprises with graphene actual business income It is 533, accounting for only 25.89%.
From the development of graphene industry across the country, the top three provinces (municipalities) of graphene enterprises are Jiangsu Province, Guangdong Province and Shandong Province, which are basically formed by the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. District, a multi-distributed development of the graphene industry pattern.
Among them, the Yangtze River Delta region has a relatively complete industrial chain, and Jiangsu has applied for technical patents in this field, ranking first in the country; the downstream application market in the Pearl River Delta region has developed rapidly, forming a platform for graphene production and equipment manufacturing. Break through the industrial development model of new energy, big health, electric heating, composite materials and other application fields; while North China has Beijing as the core, set up graphene technology innovation platform and industry alliance.
However, from the perspective of enterprise scale, small and start-up enterprises are the mainstays, and the number of medium-sized and large-scale enterprises is relatively small. In the industrial chain, technical services, applications, preparation and investment companies account for 16% and 10% respectively. 7% and 4%, of which only 9 companies were detected, accounting for only 0.4%.
Some business people told the 21st Century Business Herald that the graphene industry in the Northeast has started late, but it has high-quality graphite resources and is very optimistic about its industrial prospects. "Some leading enterprises have begun to lay out."

5-10 years of maturity
According to the "Annual Report", the global graphene market in 2016 was 7.55 million US dollars, an increase of 4.19 million US dollars compared with 2015, and the average annual growth rate reached 61% in the past three years. In China, the overall size of the graphene market in 2016 exceeded 4 billion yuan, reaching 10 times that of 2015. It is estimated that by 2025, the global graphene market is expected to reach US$2.13 billion.
Feng Guanping, the founder of China's graphene industry and the honorary president of Jiangnan Graphene Research Institute, believes that with 5-10 years of development, the graphene industry will realize the maturity of preparation technology, industrialization of terminal products, graphene supercapacitors, touch screens, and electronics. Downstream demand for devices, conductive electrodes and other products will also peak.
Compared with Europe and the United States, China's graphene industry focuses on the relatively low-end fields such as additive use and conductive heat conduction. The key technologies in the high-end fields such as sensors, chips and energy storage have not yet achieved major breakthroughs.
Many respondents believe that the reason for the difficulty in mass production of graphene is "the limitations of preparation technology." Nobel Prize winner Don Steining-Novoshawov said in an interview including this reporter that "the characteristics of graphene can meet the application in different fields, and there are new discoveries in many fields, but The key is how to control and process with different technologies and processes." He suggested that both the government and the market should use a more open approach to actively promote support applications.
According to the 21st Century Business Herald reporter, as the early introduction of the graphene industry in Changzhou Wujin District, it is planned to invest 2.5 billion yuan in five years to promote more graphene frontier technology to incubate here.
Feng Guanping said that in the past five years, the investment of governments at all levels has not exceeded 2 billion yuan, of which 1 billion yuan is mainly invested in basic research. Other sources of funds mainly rely on private investment, but the total amount does not exceed 3 billion yuan. Strength is not enough for the development, application and industrialization of a new type of material, let alone a strategic emerging material."
The "Annual Report" also believes that in the high-tech field, due to large capital investment, long industrial cycle and unclear profit model, the production of terminal products is a systematic project, which requires state capital investment, overall planning and overall layout.
Therefore, Changzhou promoted the graphene industry to focus on “central enterprises”. During the conference, several development zones and enterprises in Changzhou were connected with 13 central enterprises, trying to better combine the technological advantages, capital advantages and market advantages of central enterprises with the professional advantages of graphene enterprises.
