Japan Showa Shell Petroleum Corporation announced the creation of a new technology that can use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into methane and other resources under normal temperature and pressure. According to the Showa Shell oil company, the company used gas diffusion electrodes and newly developed catalysts for fuel cells for the first time to directly convert water and carbon dioxide into methane and ethylene under ambient temperature and pressure conditions using only sunlight. The company believes that this technology is an important progress in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and new energy synthesis.

Carbon dioxide is regarded as the culprit of global warming, and the reduction and reuse of carbon dioxide has been a global hot spot. Because carbon dioxide is chemically stable, it is difficult to convert it into hydrocarbons. Most of the previous studies have first dissolved carbon dioxide in water and converted it to synthesis. However, the solubility of carbon dioxide in water is low, and therefore conversion is difficult.

In 2030, we developed a new technology that efficiently uses carbon dioxide to produce hydrocarbons and ethanol to better recycle carbon dioxide.
