New solar equipment can be cooled while heating

Research by Chinese and American scientists recently published in the American "Joule" magazine shows that they have developed a new type of equipment that can use the principle of radiant refrigeration for cooling while using solar energy for heating. Installing such equipment on the roof helps save energy.

Radiant cooling takes advantage of the natural phenomenon of objects on the earth dissipating heat to extremely cold outer space through thermal radiation. Normally, the earth ’s atmosphere blocks heat radiation, and the air wraps around us like a "blanket", so the effect of radiation cooling is not obvious. But the researchers found that there are "holes" in the air "blanket". Infrared radiation of a specific wave band can pass through the "holes" and take away heat. The advantage of this cooling method is that it does not consume electricity.

On the other hand, solar panels heated by solar energy are already common. The team of Professor Fan Shanxun from Stanford University and Professor Chen Zhen from Southeast University of China said in their latest research that they placed solar heating plates and radiant cooling plates vertically stacked to develop a device that can heat and cool at the same time.

Chen Zhen told reporters from Xinhua News Agency that the solar panel made of semiconductor material germanium can absorb the solar band photons while allowing the mid-infrared band photons radiated from the bottom radiant cooling panel to pass through unimpeded, between the radiant cooling panel and the surrounding environment Use a vacuum device to achieve thermal isolation.

Experiments have shown that the lower and upper parts of this equipment can be said to be "hot and cold." After the upper solar panel absorbs solar energy, the temperature can be 24 degrees Celsius higher than the surrounding environment; while the lower radiant cooling panel has a significant cooling effect, and the temperature can be 29 degrees Celsius lower than the surrounding environment.

Chen Zhen said that the solar panels in the experiment converted solar energy into thermal energy, and it can also be replaced with solar panels to convert solar energy into electrical energy.

Such equipment is expected to provide energy for heating or power generation on the one hand, and save energy for air conditioning and refrigeration on the other hand, if it is used in building roofs and the like.
